SEWING workshops are being facilitated by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation in an effort to provide effective service delivery to communities on the sewing machine distribution.
The workshops will teach and develop skills on sewing machine maintenance and sewing patterns.
Women Minister, Dr Jiko Luveni said in a statement the Fiji Women's Federation would facilitate the training.
"Given that we have distributed 1817 sewing machines to 980 women's groups in Fiji, the communities have been requesting for course on sewing machine maintenance and how to sew," she said.
"This group of dedicated and professionals have to date conducted a total of 40 sewing workshops catering 676 participants from around Fiji and also repaired 253 sewing machines in the four divisions."
Dr Luveni said it was important for communities to be equipped with sewing machine maintenance skills and knowing what tools to use.
"We have received positive reports from women groups as through sewing machines they have been able to save money and earn revenue by co-ordinating their household clothing needs and school uniforms.
There is a huge list of things you need to do to keep your sewing machine in working order but these are the basics that you need to look out for on a daily basis. Not only will this list keep your machine working it is also important for your safety. Sewing machines are not toys. They can maim or even kill if not serviced correctly.
